The United States Forest Service is a federal agency that oversees the protection of the nation's forests. The agency is headed by the Chief of the Forest Service, who is a career federal employee who reports to the Under Secretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment, who is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Chief oversees the agency's activities and sets broad policy direction. In addition, the chief oversees the agency's budget and monitors its progress. The chief is assisted by five deputy chiefs. For decades, the Forest Service has struggled with how to best use its funds. As a result, the agency has been mired by laws intended to rein in timber production. The Forest Service should incorporate the principles of The Greatest Good into its annual training. The result would be a more efficient and effective agency that is more responsive to the needs of the people using forest lands. As the largest forestry research agency in the world, the Forest Service is responsible for the protection of over 193 million acres of public land. It works with private landowners, state governments, and other agencies to promote forest conservation. It also aims to ensure that the health and diversity of forests and grasslands is preserved, get more info here. The Forest Service is divided into regions, each of which oversees a large geographic area. Regional foresters report to the Chief and coordinate activities among the region's forests. They are also responsible for land-use planning and regional natural resource programs. In the Northern Region, based in Missoula, Montana, the Northern Region manages twelve National Forests and one National Grassland. The first chief of the Forest Service was Gifford Pinchot. A friend of President Franklin Roosevelt, Pinchot believed that government forest managers could better manage the nation's forests than private owners, click here for more information. Pinchot wanted the agency to be responsible for all public and private forest land across the country. This policy lasted until 1953. Forestry professionals can provide a range of services to help landowners make informed decisions about the future of their forests. By recommending appropriate management practices, they can help sustain the forest for future generations. They also help landowners manage forest resources for aesthetic purposes, wildlife value, or income. Many forest management practices have lasting effects on a forest, so cooperating with foresters is vital to maintaining its resources. The US Forest Service is part of the Department of Agriculture and receives a budget from the Subcommittee on Appropriations, which also includes the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. In the movie Playing With Fire, John Cena portrays a firefighter in the US Forest Service. Sadly, the Forest Service has also been implicated in the airtanker scandal.Check out this post for more details related to this article: https://www.encyclopedia.com/plants-and-animals/agriculture-and-horticulture/agriculture-general/forestry .
