The Forestry Service

​The forestry service began in the early 1870s. Its primary goal was to protect forests. This was accomplished by working to prevent deforestation. The service also worked on international projects and cooperated with over 100 organizations. Some of these projects included the Tropical Forestry Program, which targeted Latin America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. It also collaborated with countries like Spain, Brazil, and Israel. The forestry services industry has become international in the last few decades. As a result, many of the most important projects and issues faced by this industry cross national boundaries. For example, in 1989, the U.S. company Applied Energy Services (AES) replanted 52 million trees in Guatemala to help offset carbon dioxide emissions. The planting project began in June 1989 and was expected to take 10 years to complete, costing 15 million dollars.

Today, the forestry service oversees 155 national forests, 20 grasslands, and one tall grass prairie. Each administrative unit is comprised of a forest supervisor office, which coordinates activities across districts, allocates budgets, and provides technical support to each district. Forest supervisors are line officers. In addition, the Forest Service has a Law Enforcement & Investigations office in Washington, D.C. The office's staff is responsible for enforcing federal laws and regulations.

The Forest Service provides community assistance and works closely with state governments, private landowners, and other groups to help improve conditions in rural areas. The Forest Service is part of the Department of Agriculture. It receives its budget from the Subcommittee on Appropriations. In 1952, Newsweek praised the agency for its role in providing recreation, wildlife management, and timber stands, as well as providing pure and abundant water. This service was at its peak in 1918, with 7,000 men serving as forestry workers in the Ukraine and South Russia.
